What is The Oil Cleansing Method

October 25, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Health & Fitness

The oil cleansing method, also referred to as OCM, is a natural way to clean your face using only oils, hot water, and a soft wash cloth. You may think that’s crazy, especially if you are trying to get rid of oily skin. But the truth is, oil attracts and removes oil. The oil that you use to clean your face removes dirt, impurities and the dirty oils and leaves your skin clear and smooth.

You may also believe that if you use oils to cleanse your face it will cause acne, which is completely untrue. Some of the causes of acne include a hormonal imbalance, bacteria and inflammation, and clogged pores, however, cleaning your face will oils will not clog your pores. Using the oil cleansing method for acne prone skin can actually be very beneficial in helping you to treat and control your acne.

It is important to remember that oil attracts, dissolves, and removes dirty oils from your face. Contrary to the belief that you must remove all oils from your face when washing to have beautiful skin, washing with many of the facial cleansers on the market actually upsets the balance of your skin.

Your skin creates a barrier to help protect, heal and moisturize itself by producing its own natural oils. Harsh cleansers, such as face soap and those for acne, can remove the skin’s protective barrier and upset its balance. Rather than work against your skin by using harsh cleansers, you are working with it when you use the oil cleansing method. The result is soft, smooth and radiant skin.

It doesn’t matter if you have dry skin, oily skin, or acne-prone skin, you will benefit from using the oil cleansing method daily. Castor oil is used as one of the primary oils with OCM. It is used for healing and cleansing the skin as well as drawing out impurities. Castor oil can also cause dry skin, so it is important that the oils you use be balanced with a moisturizing oil. Some examples of moisturizing oils are extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil, wheat germ oil, and sweet almond oil.

The moisturizing oil you will use in combination with the castor should be based upon your skin type. Plus, since everyone’s skin type is different, you will need to experiment a bit with the proportions of the oils you use. You may start with a 50/50 blend and then work from there until you find the combination that best suits your skin. It’s best to start out with small batches until you have just the right blend.
